How to install Kali Linux on VirtualBox

In this tutorial, you will learn how to install Kali Linux on VirtualBox.

Kali Linux is one of the best Linux distro for hacking , penetration testing and security analysis.

You can also install Kali Linux by replacing the existing operating system, but using it via a virtual machine would be a better and safer option.

Using Kali Linux in a Virtual box is quite similar to using a regular application in your Windows/Linux system. It’s almost the same as running an application or game in your system.

Using Kali Linux in a virtual machine is safe. You can do whatever you want to do inside Kali Linux as it will not impact your host system. Your actual operating system will not be affected and your data in the host system will be safe.

How to install Kali Linux on VirtualBox

I’m going to use VirtualBox here. It is an awesome open source virtualization solution for professional or personal use. It’s available for free.

In this tutorial, we are going to talk about Kali Linux in particular but you can install all other OS whose ISO file exists.

Steps to install Kali Linux on VirtualBox

1. Download and install VirtualBox

First of all, download and install VirtualBox from Oracle’s official website.

2. Download ready-to-use virtual image of Kali Linux

After installing it successfully, go to Offensive Security’s download page to download the VM image for VirtualBox.

3. Install Kali Linux on Virtual Box

After installing VirtualBox and downloading the Kali Linux image, you just need to import it to VirtualBox in order to make it work.

Follow the steps below to import the VirtualBox image for Kali Linux:

Step 1: Launch VirtualBox. You will see an Import button – click on it

Step 2: After that, browse the file you just downloaded and select it to be imported (as you can see in the image below). The file name should end with .ova extension.

Once selected, proceed by clicking on Next.

Step 3: Now, a dialog box will appear to display settings for the virtual machine you are about to import. If you want, then you can customize them or you can also continue with defaults.

After settings, click on Import and then click on Agree in Software License Agreement popup and wait for a while.

Step 4: At last click on Start to launch it.

You might get an error for USB port 2.0 controller support, just follow the on-screen instructions of installing an additional package to fix it or you can disable it to resolve it. And, you are done!

The default user name is “kali” without quotes and default password is also kali.

Note: You must update Kali Linux before installing new applications or start practicing hacking.

You can perform every attack by using this virtual machine. The only problem with a virtual machine is that you will not able to use your built-in wireless card. You have to use a use wireless card to use in a virtual machine
